Get to know me!

ABOUT ME

Hi, my name is Delaney! I’m 19 years old and I grew up in Iowa, but right now I live in Michigan because I go to Grand Valley State University. Moving here for college was honestly a big step for me, since it meant leaving behind everything that felt familiar, but I’ve always been pretty independent and open to trying new things. I think pushing myself outside of my comfort zone has already helped me grow a lot, both as a student and as a person.

At Grand Valley, I’m majoring in Management and minoring in Advertising and Public Relations. I like the combination because management is more about leadership, organization, and strategy, while Ad and PR let me explore the creative side of communication. It feels like a good mix for me because I enjoy planning and problem solving but also love coming up with new ideas and finding ways to connect with people.

A huge part of my life here has been joining Gamma Phi Beta. Being in my sorority has given me not just friendships, but also so many chances to learn and take on responsibilities I never pictured myself doing before. I’ve gone on leadership retreats where I got to meet sisters from all across North America, which was such a cool experience because we all shared different perspectives. I’ve also helped plan and run recruitment rounds, which are a lot of work but so rewarding when everything comes together. Right now, I serve as Campus Correspondent, which means I put together baskets for other organizations on campus. It might sound small, but it’s actually been a great way to build connections and network while also helping our chapter meet new people.

Outside of school and sorority life, I’ve also been working in the wedding industry. I currently have a job as a server with a wedding catering company. It’s definitely fast-paced and sometimes stressful, but I actually enjoy it because I get to see the behind-the-scenes of how weddings come together. Even setting up tables or working during the chaos of the reception gives me a better understanding of how much detail goes into each event. These experiences have really confirmed that I want to be a wedding planner after I graduate. I love the idea of helping couples create a day they’ll never forget.

In my free time, one of my biggest passions is running. It’s something that helps me clear my head, but it’s also something I get to share with others. I coach for Girls on the Run, which is a program that helps young girls build confidence and learn life skills through running. Coaching has been one of the most rewarding things I’ve done because I get to watch these girls grow stronger and more confident over time.

Overall, I’d say I’m someone who values independence, growth, and new experiences. Moving to a new state, joining a sorority, working weddings, and coaching have all taught me that stepping outside your comfort zone really is where you learn the most. This blog is a way for me to share those experiences, reflect on what I’m learning, and hopefully show how they’re shaping me into the person I want to be.
